Playful, entertaining, and absolutely informative, our Get to Know series allows the personalities of the faculty and staff who make up the Darlington Community shine.

Beth (Bagby) Smith ('87, LD ‘12) has taught at Darlington since 1994 and is the legendary teacher of her pre-K “Smith Smarties.” Her creativity and high energy lead Darlington’s youngest students as they not only learn their A-B-C's and 1-2-3's but design thinking, coding, camping, and more. She holds a B.S. and an M.Ed. from Auburn University and has 23 years of experience in the classroom, 21 of which have been with Darlington's early childhood and primary education program. During her tenure, she has been recognized with the Beachum Master Teaching Award and Brown Faculty Award.

Let’s get to know Beth Smith (‘87)!

Where did you grow up?

Rome, Ga.

Tell us a little about your family…
My husband Scott and I have three girls, Bailey ('15), Avery ('17) and Anne Scott ('20).

Why did you choose Darlington?
I loved my time at Darlington as a student and always wanted to teach in a place that was so near and dear to my heart.

Your seven word philosophy on education is…
Fun
Engaging
Exciting
Ever-changing
Empowering

What makes a good teacher?
Someone who is willing to go above and beyond for their students, someone who lets kids be kids and who embraces all for who they are and the gifts God gave them.

What music is playing in your car?
Lots of variety!

What’s your favorite podcast?
I don't have time for that!!  No earbuds for this gal, when I have a chance, I want to hear the sounds of outside when I am exercising.

Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
There are so many! The main trait that describes all of my great teachers is CARING!  They cared for me in the classroom and beyond. They knew what I was passionate about and they asked about those passions. Even now when they see me they still know what I am up to and what I am doing.

What makes a good student?
Willingness to: get involved, get messy, try something out of their comfort zone, grin and be excited about their learning and go all in!

E-book or hardcover?
Hardcover

Beach or mountains?
Beach

The last book I read for fun was…
“Saving CeeCee Honeycutt: A Novel” by Beth Hoffman

The best advice I ever received was…
Always be humble and kind.
Don't forget who you are and whose you are.

My hobby is…
Anything with my family and being outdoors!

Cats or dogs?
Dogs

What I like most about Darlington is…
That my family has been lucky enough to live, work, grow and play here. My dad, brother, his boys, me, and my girls have all attended Darlington and have gained so much from it!
