Senior Ventures Spotlight: Carlie Chisolm

Currently, I am completing in-depth research on social psychology and profiling. Using this research, I have derived a list of criminals or felons that have impacted both our country and the Rome community.  I have organized them into categories based on their crimes. Then, I have separated them from their crime so I can investigate each person's background, or criminal profile, to attempt to understand what made that person commit such a crime.

The purpose of this project is to learn what we can do as a community and nation to prevent certain crimes or attacks by understanding what causes people to react in such indecisive and ambiguous ways. Hopefully, this project will spark a realization that crimes, such as school shootings, can be stopped before they occur. Interest in this topic began when I was younger, and I would frequently watch NCIS and CSI with my dad before I went to bed. I always wondered why those people in the tv shows committed unthinkable crimes.

When reflecting on the Portrait of a Darlington Graduate, this project is allowing me to:

  • Passionately explore learning as a personal responsibility
  • Transfer knowledge and apply skills from the familiar to the unfamiliar
  • Seek and analyze perspectives from multiple persons and cultures
  • Create, collaborate, and effectively communicate with superior oral and written skills
  • Embrace a challenge, welcome feedback, and reconsider an approach

I want to thank my mentors Chris Allen, police officer Ty Hutchins, and two gentlemen that have retired from the CIA. They are all helping me learn more about psychology and criminal profiling.

I am passionate about this topic, and I am thankful to be a part of Senior Ventures so I have the opportunity to research and learn more. I plan on presenting my project through a lecture series. My first lecture will take place in the Dodd Banquet room on December 4 from 1:20-2:10 p.m. and December 5 from 7: - 8:00 p.m. Snacks will be provided so please consider attending to learn more about my research and to ask questions!

The Senior Ventures leadership program is a year-long senior project built on a framework of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The topic and the project design is chosen by an individual student or a pair of students, and the journey is guided by Darlington faculty as well as mentors in the community. Most projects fall into one of the following categories: Investigation, Performance, Entrepreneurship, and Outreach. Candidates are selected according to proposal quality, feasibility, and commitment.
