Peru Service Trip Update: A Day of Service and Teamwork

20 students and three chaperones have headed to Peru during Thanksgiving Break to learn about the culture and work on service projects in some of the communities. Throughout the trip we will hear from students as they share about their experiences abroad.

Today's update is from juniors Marcos Jimenez Larroy and Robert Luo:

Tuesday, November 27

Today we finally started working in the girls’ dorm garden. We started with moving the rocks that the truck dropped on the streets to the garden, and that was the toughest part of the day. We took turn using the wheelbarrows and bags to carry the rocks to the garden, and everyone got sweaty after a few turns working with the rocks. However, we didn’t see anyone complaining about the hardness of the work although they are all tired.

After a few hours of hardworking, we finally moved all the rocks to the garden and completed the toughest part of the day. At that moment, I (Marcos) understood the importance of teamwork. When every single turn is exhausting and it seemed impossible to finish moving the rocks, we finished the work by collaborating with each other. During the day we had a lot of different jobs and we spent a lot of time in the girls' dorm completing those tasks.

The "wow" moment of today for us was definitely when we finished the work and we compared the garden before we started to the garden after. When we were doing the works we did not think that we were actually doing a significant work, but after several hours of work we could appreciate our effort comparing the "before" and the "after".

Tomorrow we are going to keep working in the garden and we are going to focus specifically on the fence and the wood for the garden, varnishing the wood and sanding it. Even if the people are tired, you can be sure that everyone will do their best!
