At Career Day earlier this year the Alumni Council brought 34 alumni from various fields back to campus to share their career path stories and connect with students and one another. Our keynote speaker Will Harbin (’95) shared a strong message with our students. Click here to hear Will Harbin’s entire Career Day message.
Here are the top five tips I took from his Career Day message.
You are in charge of your career path. Find your purpose at the intersection of what you are good at and what it costs to live the lifestyle you wish to live.
Be willing to take a risk. It’s a big world out there!
Look at what motivates you and plan accordingly. Understand the value of a dollar. Think about big life decisions carefully. It’s not always best to marry too early, buy the big house too soon or get another degree if the cost of that degree puts you in tremendous debt.
Don’t turn down help. Manage your stress by focusing on what you can control. Be positive and don’t get involved in office politics.
Use your connections. Leverage every relationship. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Darlington is a place where relationships matter. The relationships made as a student at Darlington last a lifetime and the connections made as an alumnus with other alumni can make a huge difference. Login to our Darlington alumni directory page and use the search options to help structure your own career path.
If you need an introduction to another alumnus, don’t hesitate to contact me or anyone in the Advancement office to help you make a connection!
