Senior Ventures Spotlight: Carlie Chisolm’s Final Project

My Senior Ventures project was an investigative project based on social psychology. I explored the bounds of profiling, either used for investigative purposes or used as a mechanism to stereotype, through social psychology. My first podcast focused on David Berowitz.

Interest in this topic began when I was younger, and I would frequently watch NCIS and CSI with my dad before I went to bed. I always wondered why those people ithe tv shows committed unthinkable crimes.  I completed in-depth research on social psychology and profiling. Using this research, I derived a list of criminals that have impacted our country. All of the criminals chosen were serial killers within the United States. I separated them into categories based on the intensity of their crimes and their backgrounds. Then, I separated them from their crime so I could investigate each person's background or criminal profile, to attempt to understand what made that person commit such a crime.

The purpose of this project was to learn what we can do as a community and nation to prevent certain crimes or attacks by understanding what causes people to react in such indecisive and ambiguous ways. Hopefully, this project sparked a realization that some crimes can be stopped before they occur.

I presented my project through a  two-part lecture series. It was meant to be four parts, but due to the Covid-19 outbreak my lectures were cut short. To finish my lectures, I have decided to turn them into Podcasts. I had originally planned to do ten to twelve serial killer profiles, but since I will be doing podcasts now I have decided to do two serial killer profiles in grave detail. I will also be debunking a common misconception about a serial killer known as Son of Sam! If the podcasts turn out to be a hit I would love to continue this series into the summer and do more serial profiles to share.

When reflecting on the Portrait of a Darlington Graduate, this project is allowing me to:

  • Passionately explore learning as a personal responsibility
  • Transfer knowledge and applies skills from the familiar to the unfamiliar
  • Seek and analyze perspectives from multiple persons and cultures
  • Creates, collaborates, and effectively communicates with superior oral and written skills
  • Embraces a challenge, welcomes feedback, and reconsiders an approach

I want to thank my mentors Chris Allen, police officer Ty Hutchins, and two gentlemen that have retired from the CIA. They all helped me learn more about psychology and criminal profiling.

I am passionate about this topic, and I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to be a part of the Senior Ventures program to be able to research and learn more.
