Curriculum Spotlight: Upper School History

Darlington's curriculum emphasizes the pursuit of individual excellence in conjunction with the skills necessary for success in the future: collaboration, problem solving, synthesis, conflict resolution, leadership, digital fluency and global citizenship. The Curriculum Spotlight series highlights unique classroom activities and connects them to the overarching curriculum map which aligns specific skills to classes and grade levels for students in pre-K to 12.

Darlington's teachers have always embraced new teaching tools. Leigh Hadaway, Upper School history teacher, has been using Jamboard to collaborate with her students as they learn about Revolutionary America. Essentially, Jamboard is a whiteboard app where users can quickly pull in images from a Google search, organize save work to the cloud automatically, use the easy-to-read handwriting and shape recognition tool, and draw with a stylus but erase with their finger – just like a whiteboard. It's a great tool for engaging students in the learning process, whether working together in a traditional classroom or through distance learning.

"We loved using Jamboard to collaborate and rank the Bill of Rights," said Hadaway. "We had lots of good discussion and debate and the online students were equally engaged."
