Senior Ventures Spotlight: Tanya Maples

There are several opportunities to provide community service in Rome, and we all need to take the time to give back to others. My Senior Ventures project involves working with the local Ruth and Naomi House and Restoration Rome

One of my passions is cooking, and I want to share my passion with these organizations. The Ruth and Naomi House serves women and children, and I would like to teach the residents how to cook easy meals and desserts. We will all cook and eat together! Recently, I worked with the women at the house to bake, decorate, and eat Halloween cookies. This was a great opportunity for me to get to know them better while we had fun baking together. My goal is to teach them how to plan for a meal and make convenient dishes to feed their families. Currently, I am scheduled to cook with the residents twice a month. I also plan on making a cookbook that includes the dishes we bake together and other recipes.

I also love working with children. I hope to work with the children at Restoration Rome to create fun crafts, provide tutoring sessions, and to make healthy snacks. I selected this project because I’m really passionate about helping others and I want to make a difference in someone's life. I want people who don’t feel loved and are in need to experience someone that cares for them and wants to spend time with them.  I also really want to make people smile and make a difference especially during the pandemic which has been difficult for all of us. I plan to raise money or donations to get food supplies so we can cook together. I am enthusiastic about this opportunity to help others!

The Senior Ventures leadership program is a year-long senior project built on a framework of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The topic and the project design are chosen by an individual student or a pair of students, and the journey is guided by Darlington faculty as well as mentors in the community. Most projects fall into one of the following categories: Investigation, Performance, Entrepreneurship, and Outreach. Candidates are selected according to proposal quality, feasibility, and commitment.
