Darlington Connects: Charlie Williams (’82)

We're excited to connect with our alumni through our Darlington Connects series. Today, we hear from Charlie Williams (’82), a loyal Darlington Fund supporter, class agent, volunteer, and parent of three Darlington graduates - Kelsey Ann (’12), Chas (’14), and Dawson (’20).

Charlie Williams (’82) enrolled at Darlington as a day student in 1974 as a member of the inaugural fourth-grade class. He played football, basketball and tennis in high school and among his favorite teachers were Brad Gioia, his English teacher and tennis coach, and Jack Summerbell, day school administration.

"Mr. Gioia required that each student write a paper a week in his English Honors class. This process taught me the required skills to write and express myself in an organized and thoughtful manner. Charlie said Mr. Summerbell (aka "Sneaky Jack") would smile at me occasionally!" He went on to say, "The Darlington experience definitely prepared me for the next level of education and life itself. Our children have all benefited from their time at Darlington as well. We would say that the Darlington experience was a great investment.”

After Darlington, Charlie graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in economics. He became a real estate broker and received further education as a certified property manager. He has worked in his family’s business, Charles Williams REIC, for 36 years, focusing on development and management of multi-family and senior housing.

"I continue to maintain relationships with my classmates to this day, some which are my closest friends," said Charlie, whose class just celebrated its 40th reunion. "When I share that me and my children attended Darlington, I typically receive a very favorable response.”

When asked what he would share with young alumni and students, he said, “If you maintain the work ethic that you were taught at Darlington and attempt to serve others, I believe that you will possess two of the key qualities that may add to your success. Darlington has served me and my family as a great foundation for education and a solid preparation for the journey of life.”

Charlie said he is glad to help anyone in the Darlington Community looking to connect with him!
