Discovering the Timber in the Trees

Tuesday, February 2, 2021 | By Owen Kinney | 240 views

Small groups of AP Environmental Science students compete against each other to maximize yield in mock timber harvests. Challenged to find the most valuable 60-foot diameter circular plot, the groups search the forest for a specific location that would yield the highest volume of wood. After measuring the trees in their plot, each group compares their results to whole class means and extrapolates their timber volume to estimate the land area required to frame a dream house or to replace the hardwood floors in a basketball gym. Forestry activities offer great opportunities to appreciate both the aesthetic and the instrumental value of forest resources...while social distancing.
