Have you ever said, “I can’t even draw a stick figure?" Well, take a look at these Keith Haring inspired, life-sized figurative paintings created by Mrs. Thoem’s 6-8 grade Visual Arts and 3-D Arts classes.

American artist and social activist Keith Haring, is known for his cartoon like images, colorful works and iconic motifs. Inspired by graffiti artists, he began drawing in New York’s subway stations, filling empty poster spaces with chalk drawings which people would walk past every day. His aim was to make art accessible to everyone and these works allowed him to interact with a diverse audience.

Students explored his use of imagery, color, and pattern, as well as the ways he made his art more accessible to the public. They worked in groups to trace, paint and create patterns reflective of Keith Haring’s artwork. These vibrant paintings are on display in the Ledbetter Commons in Thatcher Hall.
