Upper School: Welcome Back to School!

Chad Woods | August 4, 2020 | 467 views

Dear Upper School families,

August is here which means it is time to start school! We are excited to welcome new and returning students to campus for fall sports practice, orientation, dorm move-in, and the first day of school. We are also excited to engage our students who cannot be with us initially in our new online program.

Online Registration and Medical Form Requirements

If you haven’t already, please begin the registration process by logging into the Darlington website and visiting the 2020-2021 Registration Section of the parent portal. Please complete the online Medical Report questionnaire and upload the following documents: your student’s physical, current immunization/vaccination record, and a front and back copy of your student’s medical insurance card. If you have any questions about uploading the documents, please contact Denise Evans. If you have questions about logging in, please contact Paige Hamil.

Daily Schedule

As mentioned in previous emails, our daily schedule has been changed a little to accommodate three lunch periods and to have more time to clean between classes. You can view the new daily schedule here. A personalized schedule for each student will be available on their student page.

We will have daily temperature checks.  There is a slight change to how we will have these screenings.  Students who plan to eat breakfast will need to have their temperature checked outside the dining hall.  Students who have a first period class will be checked by their teacher before class begins.  Students who have first period free will need to have their temperature checked in the Student Life Office when they arrive on campus. All students and faculty/staff will be required to have their temperature checked prior to the start of class.

All students and faculty/staff are required to wear a face covering. We recommend you bring two face coverings to campus to use as a spare.

In order to reduce exposure, we will continue the practice that all students remain on campus until their last requirement (that includes practice). A day student who is done with classes early and does not have anything after school may leave only after parents have notified Denise Evans via email or phone (devans@darlingtonschool.org or 706-236-0435) and the student signs out through her office in Wilcox Hall. For the time being, the senior privilege of going off campus during the school day will be postponed until further notice.

Darlington is asking everyone to limit your exposure to those outside of your household. We want to make sure we are making campus as safe as possible. Avoid the 3 C’s: crowded places, close contact settings, and confined/enclosed spaces.  Also remember to wash your hands/use hand sanitizer, wear a face covering if you are outside of your home, and be mindful about the people you interact with and their health.  We want everyone to start the school year as healthy as possible and limiting your exposure starting now can assist with you being healthy.

New Student and Residential Student Orientation

Details on our Student Orientation on Saturday, August 15, will be sent to those families who will be participating. We are limiting this year’s orientation to new day students and residential families only. Please contact your student’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about a specific class.

Hybrid Learning Program

If you are planning to take advantage of Darlington’s online program, please let us know by Friday, August 7, so we can plan accordingly. Boarding students should contact Jennifer Rundles and day students should contact Chad Woods. We will be flexible on entering and exiting the online program, but communication is going to be important as our teachers prepare for both on-campus and off-campus classes.

For more information about community wellness protocols and procedures, please visit the Community Wellness Guide on the website. It will provide the most up-to-date information regarding Darlington’s response to the pandemic and the opening of school.

We thank you for your support and trusting Darlington with your child and we look forward to seeing you soon!
