Earlier this week, the Darlington School Soccer Academy U18 boys’ team took home the Gulf Coast National Premier League (NPL) Championship in Jackson, Miss. The young men won 5-2 in the first game over Gulf Coast United, and then again in the final game 1-0 over the Cajun Soccer Club—the reigning Louisiana state champs.
The wins secured a berth to the NPL Finals (formerly the NPL Champions Cup) this July in Aurora, Colo. The NPL Finals is US Club Soccer's league-based national championship.
"It’s a testament to the boys and the program that throughout the league play we were the No. 1 seed,” said Kevin Ray, Soccer Academy operations director. “This made us come into the playoffs with a target on our back, and we were able to dig deep and pull out the championship."
The Soccer Academy girls' team also played in the championship, coming up short in the semifinals 2-1 to Mississippi Rush; but winning a consolation game 3-0 over Gulf Coast United. “The National Premier League is a great addition to our schedule for the Soccer Academy,” said Chad Liddle, Soccer Academy director. “It’s great competition from clubs around the Southeast and it helps us continue to expand the name and reputation of our program.”
