Distinguished Alumnus

Leaders. Dreamers. Game-changers.

For more than a century, Darlington alumni have carried the values of wisdom, service, and honor beyond our campus gates and into the real world. Each year, the Distinguished Alumnus/na Award is presented to Darlington and/or Thornwood alumni representing one or more of the following areas:

  • notable achievement in professional field
  • service to his or her community, state or nation
  • service to the arts, sciences, or humanitarian causes
  • loyalty to Darlington

Established in 1983, the Distinguished Alumnus/na Award is given by the Alumni Council. Nominations are solicited each year from the alumni body.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Meet Larry

Upon graduating from Darlington, Larry Williams (’67) was honored to receive the Senior Scroll for Outstanding Service to the Darlington Community. His loyal service to the school continued well after his departure, and so it really was no surprise that – 55 years later – he was awarded the 2022 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Meet Frank

It is fitting that a man who specialized in treating hearts for so many years would have such a big heart for others and his community. In October, former trustee and longtime cardiologist Dr. Frank Stegall Sr. (‘62) was honored as the 2021 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient during Alumni Weekend.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Meet Bill

Bill Smith ('72) knew the day he visited Darlington’s campus in 1968 that he was where he needed to be. Since his start by the Lakeside, his fingerprints have remained on campus as a student and loyal alum, and he was recognized for his career contributions and devotion to the school when he was named Distinguished Alumnus in 2019.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Meet Villa

Upon first meeting Villa (Sulzbacher) Hizer (’66T, LD ’12), you might not peg her as a risk-taker. A successful businesswoman and community leader with a heart for serving others, she is the epitome of southern charm. But the truth is, Hizer sees great value in taking risks, both personally and professionally.
