Catharine “Kiki” Rowsey is excited to join the Darlington Community as a newly named Upper School math teacher. With a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Georgia and an M.A. in Teaching from Emory University, she will teach Pre-Calculus and Statistics at Darlington beginning this fall.
During the last three years, Rowsey has taught a variety of math courses at Norcross High School in north Georgia, including AP Statistics, Accelerated Geometry, Algebra, and High School Mathematics.
After graduating from UGA and studying abroad at Oxford University in England, she worked for Aon Hewitt in the executive benefits department, where she was able to volunteer with Junior Achievement teaching high schools financial literacy curriculum.
“I loved the classroom, so I followed my passion and started a one-year Master of Arts in Teaching program at Emory University,” she said.
Rowsey said she looks forward to building relationships with students, helping them find a love for learning, and helping them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
“I strongly believe in Nelson Mandela’s words that ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,'” she added.
As an educator, Rowsey believes she has the opportunity to lay the foundation of her students’ success. She hopes to provide them with an education that provides challenges and supports opportunities.
Rowsey agrees with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
Coming from a large public school with over 30 math teachers and a large team of teachers to collaborate with and learn from, Rowsey hopes to add value to Darlington's math department by sharing the best strategies and resources she knows.
"Kiki made a lasting impact of the students she met with during the interview process, from the students in my advisee group to those in the class she taught and those she had lunch with," said Matthew Peer, director of Upper School. "Each student she encountered was excited about the possibility of being in her class next year.”
She and her husband, Jamie, who serves as general manager at Coosa Country Club, are excited to live on campus and become immersed in the Darlington family.
While not in the classroom, Rowsey enjoys hiking, traveling, cooking, and reading.
