Honoring the nation’s best, the National Scholastic Press Association has named Darlington School's Inkslinger literary magazine as one of 16 finalists in its prestigious Pacemaker competition.

“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” executive director Laura Widmer said. “NSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.”

Pacemaker finalists will be recognized on Thursday, April 16, at the Opening Ceremony of the Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Nashville.

"The Inkslinger has now been honored with the highest awards in scholastic journalism," said Katie Merritt, media arts teacher. "This fall the magazine was recognized as a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and will be honored in New York City in March. We now look forward to finding out if they have received the Pacemaker Award in Nashville. I'm so proud of the 2019 editors (Alexander Greene, Chloe Duck, Izzie Warden and Ashlyn Woods) and all of the students who contributed to this dynamic publication!"

To select the 16 finalists, a team of judges analyzed and discussed 96 entries from 29 states. From the 16 finalists, seven literary arts and one specialty magazine will earn Pacemaker honors.

The Pacemaker finalists represent the top 17 percent and the Pacemaker winners represent approximately the top 10 percent of the entries. The magazines were published during the 2018-19 school year.

Earlier this year the Inkslinger was also honored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association as a Crown Finalist and by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association with the 2018-2019 General Excellence award.
