Curriculum Spotlight: 7th Grade Life Science

Jennifer Collins | October 6, 2020 | 770 views

Darlington's curriculum emphasizes the pursuit of individual excellence in conjunction with the skills necessary for success in the future: collaboration, problem solving, synthesis, conflict resolution, leadership, digital fluency and global citizenship. The Curriculum Spotlight series highlights unique classroom activities and connects them to the overarching curriculum map which aligns specific skills to classes and grade levels for students in pre-K to 12.

Seventh-graders in Ms. Steph Bradshaw's Life Science class have been studying about ecology and biomes. Rather than taking a test for the ecology unit, they were tasked with writing a song that included facts about the different biomes found on earth. They then produced a karaoke-style video of their song using iMovie and Garage Band. Click here to watch a great video of Reese Bell ('26) performing her song "Biome Man," based on Billy Joel's "Piano Man."

Curriculum Map Connection:

Essential Question:

  • How do ecosystems and biomes differ and how do ecosystems dwell inside of biomes?

Skills:

  • Define Biome
  • Define ecosystem
  • Identify biotic and abiotic features
