The Darlington Chapter of the Cum Laude Society inducted 23 students, one faculty member, and one alum during a ceremony in Morris Chapel on Thursday, April 22.
According to Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss (’63), Chapter president, membership in the Cum Laude Society is the highest academic honor Darlington can bestow upon a group of students. Election is highly selective. In order to be eligible for consideration, a student must have an A(93) for all four years; must have taken at least 10 Honors and AP courses (five of which must be AP courses) over four years; students must also have demonstrated good character, honor, and integrity in all aspects of their school life. Not all students who meet these criteria will necessarily be elected, as membership is limited by The Cum Laude Society's national rules to maximum of 20% of each senior class.
Inductees included Eli Vandiver Baldwin, Daria Alana Black, Madeline Elizabeth Bradshaw, Cooper Efton Cates, Yihan Cui, Cameron John Hywel Evans, Tianning Feng, Riccardo Frisiani, Emma Jayne Good, Yicheng Guo, Angelina Anne Laramie, Luke Evan Lewis, Cappie Houston May, Jonathan James Murphy, Favour Adeola Onyinyechi Olushola, Elissa Diane Smith, Oluwasiji Oluwaseun Soetan, Yizhe Wang, Ivy Cole Watters, Ashlyn Breanna Woods, Steven Yan, Yi Yuan and Yiwen Zhang.
“The Cum Laude Society recognizes excellence in academic work,” said Moss. “As these students pursue their education, it is our hope that they will accept this honor as a responsibility to make a contribution to the ongoing search for greater understanding of one's self and of society.”
The society also inducted Darlington's Associate Dean of College Guidance Ivy Brewer and alumnus Will Enloe ('90).
Brewer has been a member of Darlington’s college guidance staff since 2007. In her role, she has visited more than 200 college campuses and has been designated a Certified Educational Planner. Brewer holds a B.A. from the University of Georgia, an M.A. from Florida Gulf Coast University and graduate certificate in college counseling from University of California Los Angeles Extension. She is a member of both the National Association for College Admission Counseling and the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling. Ivy also serves on the Board of Directors for SACAC.
Enloe has continued to serve Darlington as a faithful alumnus. A past president of the Alumni Council, he is a member of the J.J. Darlington Society and J.D. Hanks Sr. ('27) Heritage Society. Enloe holds a B.A. from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and currently serves the Floyd Healthcare Foundation as a planned giving officer.
