We're excited to connect with our alumni through our Darlington Connects Q & A series. Today, we hear from Marie (Hodge) Gordon ('99, LD '12), director of communications for the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

How and when did you land at Darlington for your education?

I came to Darlington in 11th grade after my family moved to Rome. I visited the campus before moving there and fell in love with its beauty and wide array of student opportunities - not to mention the global connections.

What activities were you involved in during your Darlington experience?

In addition to academics, I was involved with the swim team, yearbook, Darlington Players, chorus, and similar activities.

What would you extract from your Darlington experience as the most useful skill set in your life today - whether professionally, personally, or both?

Understanding a wide set of views (open-minded approach to learning/life) and relationship-building. Honor/honesty, seeking wisdom and overall loyalty also help!

Which teacher(s), coach(es), and/or faculty were your strongest mentors?

Mr. Powell, Mr. Saunders, Mr. Awsumb, Mrs. Ortega, Mrs. DiRuggiero, Mrs. Schlenk, Mr. Moss

Post Darlington, what was your educational path and then your professional path?

University of Georgia, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson and his campaigns (16+ years), now my current job at the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Can you shed some light on the Darlington relationships that have made/continue to make an impact in your life?

Up and down, students older and younger than me - faculty then and now - all of it! My life is enriched by Darlington.

For our young alums, those in their undergraduate pursuits, what advice would you offer concerning the first steps in their careers post-undergrad?

Explore! Ask questions! Don't be afraid to reach out to those in your network for advice, to help with introductions, and to make more connections. Don't "throw away" anyone.

You give back to Darlington in more ways than one- can you share why you give back to your alma mater?

Darlington continues to enrich my life. My husband and I are grateful for what Darlington gives us and our children.

How would you be willing to help fellow alums in their educational or professional pursuits?

Happily. Networking, introductions, reviewing resumes - just ask.
