It is with sadness that I share news of the passing of Distinguished Alumna Villa (Sulzbacher) Hizer (’66T, LD ’12) on Monday. Ms. Hizer made a lasting impact on Darlington and this community, and set the example of what it means to give to the greater good.

Ms. Hizer’s legacy of service to Darlington runs deep. A 2012 graduate of Leadership Darlington, she served on Darlington’s Alumni Council for 12 years and as class agent for the past 16 years.

A long-standing supporter of The Darlington Fund, she was a member of both the J.J.Darlington Society and the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society. She also served on the Thornwood Cabinet for the Second Century Campaign and the Thornwood Restoration Campaign Cabinet.

Her service and dedication to the school are among the reasons she was given Darlington’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2016.

Ms. Hizer was a true light in the Darlington community. Whether she was helping make calls for a fundraising campaign or writing notes to welcome new students to Darlington, she made everyone around her feel like they were loved. Her strength, grace, and fighting spirit were an inspiration to me, and to many in our community.

A celebration of life service will take place in Darlington’s Morris Chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023.
