To commemorate 100 years of boarding at Darlington this year, we asked our boarding alumni to share one word that comes to mind when they reflect on their boarding experience. Through this special series of Darlington Connects blogs, we are thrilled to share those words and a glimpse into the unique experiences and memories that our boarding alumni cherish. Today, we hear from Mark Huang (’11).
Mark Huang (’11), who says his boarding experience is best described as “eye-opening,” fondly reflects on his time at Darlington. His story serves as a testament to the impact of Darlington's boarding program, where students like Mark find not only education but also a sense of community, growth, and service.
Mark, a four-year boarder from Taiwan, lived in Summerbell House from his first day on campus to his last, and the community spirit left a lasting impression on his life. He credits his head of house, Reba Barnes, as his favorite duty staff member, whose guidance and support were invaluable throughout his time at Darlington.
“Being a boarding student is probably one of the most unique and rewarding experiences I’ve been fortunate enough to have,” he said. “Living in a community with people from all over the world, as well as learning to be a young adult and building out your own structured life, had fundamental contributions to my university years and beyond.”
When asked about his favorite RUMPUS event, Mark enthusiastically singled out Lip Sync. “It was the highlight of the event, where house spirits were at their peak,” he said. “The creativity that came through each performance simply got better and better each year, making it an unforgettable experience.”
During his time at Darlington, Mark was involved in various activities, including playing in the Orchestra and trying out different sports, including, as he put it, “a brief and not exactly successful attempt at diving.” He also embraced leadership opportunities, serving on the Honor Council and in student government as well as holding leadership roles within Summerbell House, like academic prefect. Mark was recognized with Darlington’s Servant Leadership Award in 2011.
Mark's commitment to Darlington's motto of "Service Beyond Self" was evident in his volunteer work, totaling over 450 hours during his four years. He said this has stuck with him even a decade later. With the guidance of Mrs. Barnes, who provided a wide array of opportunities to engage with the local community, Mark got as involved as possible.
“Every one of those activities demonstrated that it does not take a lot for us to give something back or lend a healing hand and that it does not require a big gesture to make a difference,” he said.
Today, he carries forward "Service Beyond Self," recognizing that even the smallest gestures can make a meaningful difference in the community.
Following graduation, Mark pursued a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Sociology at Emory University. He furthered his studies with a Master of Science in Sociology at the London School of Economics and a Master of Science in Actuarial Science at the University of Kent.
Currently, Mark lives in London and works in special reinsurance, focusing on natural catastrophe covers. His role involves reviewing catastrophe model outputs to conduct risk quantification, selection, and pricing.
“Like many people, it wasn’t something I set my eyes on in high school or even in college,” he said. “But in some way, it allows me to combine all the subjects I have studied and build a very exciting career.”
Mark says he hopes each new generation of boarding students finds their experience as fulfilling and rewarding as his was. He extends an invitation to connect with members of the Darlington Community, especially any of those residing in London.
