Insect Expo

Members of the Darlington Community came out to discover insects and other creatures at the Insect Expo, which was hosted by fifth-graders and Upper School science students.

Twelve different orders of insects were researched and presented at the expo. Fifth-graders created informational tri boards, creative Toontastic cartoons, and beautiful oil-pastel drawings which were all on display. Additionally, Mr. Kinney led the fifth-graders and his zoology class on an exploration around campus to collect live insects and other interesting creatures that were also displayed. There were also beautiful insect drawings from pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade as well as giant paper mache bees from the middle school Advanced Art class.

In preparation for the Insect Expo, Upper School science teachers Owen Kinney and Mike Hudson created an aluminum cast of a fire ant bed. They started with a simple forge setup, bought a small graphite crucible, and melted scrap aluminum from the robotics lab. They then poured the melted aluminum over an ant bed.
