Students in the advanced studio classes created nature drawings using conté crayons, a material named after Nicolas-Jacques Conté, the French scientist who invented this medium in the late 18th century. The conté crayon is a particularly hard pencil or stick made of a mixture of graphite and clay and is traditionally made in black, brown, or sanguine (reddish-brown).
