Why Choose Darlington for Middle School?

Choosing the right school for your child’s middle school years is one of the most important decisions you can make. These are formative years when students develop critical habits of mind, confidence, independence, and a clearer sense of who they are. Darlington School offers a dynamic, supportive, and challenging environment where students in grades 6-8 are empowered to explore their interests, grow academically, and build the character that will guide them through high school and beyond.

A Strong Academic Foundation Built for Growth
The middle grades at Darlington are designed to be both rigorous and nurturing. The academic program focuses on developing critical-thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. Students benefit from small class sizes and teachers who are passionate about middle grades education and attuned to the unique needs of students in grades 6-8.

Our core curriculum includes math, science, literacy, social studies, and world languages, with hands-on projects and inquiry-based learning at the center of instruction. The integration of technology and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) principles further enhances learning, encouraging students to think creatively and adapt to new challenges. Additionally, Exploratory and Enrichment periods give middle-grade students the opportunity to explore and develop skills such as public speaking, design thinking, and money management, while middle grades "trip week" takes entire grade levels on a week-long experiential learning trip each year.

In eighth grade, the Capstone Project is a culminating experience that brings together everything our students have learned across their Exploratory classes and challenges them to apply their knowledge to real-world issues. Beyond its academic application, this project has become a powerful vehicle for community connection, student growth, and the kind of purpose-driven learning that lasts a lifetime.

The goal of Darlington’s middle grades program is not just to prepare students for high school—but to spark a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.

Personalized Support Every Step of the Way
Students in grades 6-8 are in different places developmentally, and Darlington recognizes that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to learning. That’s why academic and emotional support are a critical part of our middle grades program.

The Teaching and Learning Center offers tailored academic support and enrichment to students with identified learning differences. Whether a student needs help with executive functioning, reading strategies, or managing workload, our learning specialists work closely with them to build confidence and independence.

Our school counselor is actively involved in the development of our wellness curriculum and character education programs, working each day to ensure that every student feels safe and supported.

Additionally, our middle grades advisory program plays a key role in student development. Students are paired with a faculty advisor who serves as a mentor and advocate—meeting regularly to check in on academic progress, social-emotional well-being, and goal-setting.

A Place to Explore Arts, Athletics & Leadership
Darlington believes that middle school is the perfect time for students to try new things and discover their passions. Students participate in a wide range of arts opportunities, including band, chorus, strings, theater, media arts, and visual arts. These programs allow students to experiment creatively, build skills, and gain confidence through public performances and exhibitions.

Athletics is another core part of student life. With multiple sports offered each season—from cross country to soccer, basketball, swimming, tennis, and more—students learn the value of teamwork, perseverance, and healthy competition. Coaches focus not only on skill development, but also on sportsmanship and character.

Students are also encouraged to lead. From serving on Student Council to participating in service projects and clubs, Darlington gives students in grades 6-8 real opportunities to have a voice in their community. We’re also proud to offer the Darlington School Leadership Institute beginning in seventh grade. In partnership with the University of Georgia’s J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, DSLI focuses on foundational leadership principles like communication and understanding differences.

A Community That Values Character & Belonging
In addition to academics and extracurriculars, another thing that sets Darlington School apart is its culture. Students in grades 6-8 are part of a student body that spans from pre-K to grade 12, with students from an average of 25 states and 30 countries each year.

The middle grades program places a strong emphasis on values such as respect, responsibility, integrity and compassion. Through dedicated character education programming, advisory sessions, and community service, students are taught what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

The school’s inclusive atmosphere helps students build meaningful relationships with peers and teachers. Middle schoolers are known, valued, and supported—creating a safe environment where they can grow with confidence and courage.

The Darlington Difference
Darlington’s middle grades program is not just about preparing students for high school—it’s about helping them become confident, curious, and compassionate individuals. With a thoughtful academic structure, personalized support, and an enriching array of activities, Darlington provides an exceptional foundation during these important years.
