Lower Grades Activities

Our students learn by doing.

Now is the time to spark your child's interests. To allow your young tinkerer to experiment in the lab. Or your little Picasso to finally get ahold of a paint brush. From academics to service learning, our many activities allow your child to find what they love to do and to enrich their lives through learning about it with their peers.
Class plays
Class plays are produced annually by students in each grade, giving them an opportunity to perform onstage in a public arena, build confidence and have fun in the process.
Strings
Strings is open to students in grades 3-5. Each grade is considered a separate ensemble, building each school year on methods learned the previous year. Beginners are welcome at any grade level, and are taught as a separate group until they are able to join the more experienced players later in the year. Each class moves at an individualized pace.
Chorus
Chorus is open to students in grades 3-5. During the course of the year, students learn a variety of choral pieces to be performed at school and community functions and seasonal concerts.
Band
Band is open to students in grade 5. Participants may choose any wind or percussion instrument. Music is arranged specifically for each student’s skill level, which allows for an individualized pace of advancement. Harmony is introduced early through specialized instrumental arrangements.
Weekly assemblies
Weekly assemblies are used to bring the whole school together to celebrate our successes and to recognize student achievements, both personal and academic.
The Buddy Program
The Buddy Program encourages friendship and interaction between students at different grade levels, in addition to providing an opportunity for older students to serve as role models for the younger children. Buddies meet at various intervals throughout the year for fun activities such as art projects, story time, buddy lunches, holiday projects and athletic events.
Special events
Special events support Darlington and its mission and promote the school within our community. Examples include the Fall for the Arts, Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Moms, Field Day, Whole School Pep Rallies, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day and holiday concerts.
Community Outreach
Community outreach allows students to learn about giving back to their community and develop compassion and empathy for others. Projects are coordinated by the student-led Pre-K to 8 Service Committee.
Field Trips
Field trips are coordinated within grade levels, providing opportunities for students to experience learning outside the traditional classroom. Students visit local sites in addition to taking advantage of the many cultural and educational opportunities available in the metro-Atlanta area (i.e. Fernbank, Atlanta Aquarium, Alliance Theater, Woodruff Arts Center, TELLUS Science Museum).
